The full ranking
Clay cliffs on Block Island, singing sand on the North Shore, and the wild outer arm of Cape Cod. The New England coast at its most beautiful, from Acadia to Long Island Sound.
Coast Guard Beach (Eastham, MA)
Where Thoreau's Great Beach begins: a wide Atlantic strand backed by tall dunes and the Nauset Marsh, with seals offshore and the old white Coast Guard station standing watch. American Oceans ranks it the best beach in New England.
Crane Beach (Ipswich, MA)
Four miles of pristine North Shore barrier beach on the Crane Estate, backed by more than five miles of boardwalk trails through protected dunes. A critical piping plover nesting site managed by the Trustees of Reservations.
Sand Beach (Acadia National Park, ME)
A 290-yard pocket of shell-fragment sand wedged between granite headlands and pines in Acadia National Park, with the Beehive looming behind. No beach in New England has a more dramatic setting.
Goose Rocks Beach (Kennebunkport, ME)
Three quiet miles of soft sand on the Kennebunkport coast, sheltered by an offshore reef that keeps the water calm and the sunsets long. Yankee Magazine counts it among New England's prettiest, and the crowds never seem to find it.
Race Point Beach (Provincetown, MA)
The wild tip of Cape Cod, where towering dunes meet open Atlantic and seals patrol the breakers. Protected within the Cape Cod National Seashore, with sunsets over the water that Taking the Kids calls almost too beautiful to be real.
Good Harbor Beach (Gloucester, MA)
Gloucester's expansive white-sand crescent, where low tide opens a walkable land bridge to Salt Island. One of the prettiest beaches in New England by Yankee Magazine's reckoning, with views that earn the title.
Ogunquit Beach (ME)
A 3.5-mile ribbon of white sand between the Atlantic and the Ogunquit River, with the Marginal Way footpath winding along the rocky shore to Perkins Cove. The name is Abenaki for beautiful place by the sea, and the beach earns it.
Nauset Beach (Orleans, MA)
Ten miles of broad Atlantic sand and dunes begin at Nauset's famous surf break, where seals bob beyond the breakers and the outer beach runs unbroken toward Chatham. East-facing, it serves some of the best sunrises in New England.
Singing Beach (Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA)
Cradled by rocky headlands in Manchester-by-the-Sea, with squeaky quartz sand that hums underfoot and a commuter rail stop a half mile away. A classic New England postcard of a beach.
Mayflower Beach (Dennis, MA)
At low tide the bay pulls back to reveal hundreds of yards of warm, rippled tidal flats that glow gold at sunset. Reviewers say it looks like the Caribbean; the sunsets over Cape Cod Bay say otherwise, in the best way.
