Cherry Creek / Upper Tuolumne (California)
The undisputed hardest commercially rafted whitewater in America: 15 Class V rapids in nine miles, dropping over 100 feet per mile through granite chutes above Yosemite country. Outfitters require a swim test through a Class IV rapid before anyone touches a paddle.
Upper Gauley River (West Virginia)
The Beast of the East wakes each fall when Summersville Dam opens, stacking five legendary Class V rapids, Pillow Rock, Lost Paddle, and Sweet's Falls among them, into ten relentless miles of Appalachian gorge.
Gore Canyon (Colorado)
Four miles of flatwater lull rafters into the chasm before the Colorado River drops into five miles of Class IV-V mayhem, including the 14-foot Tunnel Falls. Guides screen for fitness and prior whitewater experience before launch.
Cal Salmon River (California)

Upper Animas River (Colorado)
Often called the most difficult commercially run river in the country: roughly 25 miles of nearly continuous Class IV-V whitewater fed by San Juan fourteeners, with a mandatory swim test and a take-out reached only by the Durango and Silverton narrow gauge railroad.
Lochsa River (Idaho)
Lochsa means rough water, and this undammed snowmelt torrent delivers 30 big rapids in 30 miles. At peak May flows the wave trains come continuous, fast, and ice cold, with swims measured in hundreds of yards.
Upper Youghiogheny River (Maryland)
A steep, boulder-choked staircase out of Friendsville that demands surgical moves in small rafts. Its tight Class IV-V drops are the most technical commercial whitewater east of the Rockies.
Grand Canyon, Colorado River (Arizona)
The crown jewel of American river running: 277 miles and up to three weeks of big water, with Lava Falls, Crystal, and Hance generating hydraulics powerful enough to flip fully loaded rafts.
Chattooga River, Section IV (Georgia/South Carolina)
The Deliverance river saves its worst for last: the Five Falls drop 75 feet in a quarter mile, with Corkscrew, Jawbone, and Sock'em Dog in machine-gun succession on a free-flowing Wild and Scenic gem.
