Crane Beach (Ipswich)
The North Shore's crown jewel, four miles of white sand and five miles of dune boardwalks on the Trustees-run Crane Estate, about 45 minutes from the city. It appears on every scenic ranking of the region, usually at the top.
Good Harbor Beach (Gloucester)
Gloucester's sugar-sand crescent, where low tide opens a walkable land bridge to Salt Island. Yankee Magazine calls it one of the prettiest beaches in New England.
Singing Beach (Manchester-by-the-Sea)
Cradled by rocky headlands in Manchester-by-the-Sea, with squeaky quartz sand that hums underfoot and a commuter rail stop a half mile away. Many North Shore regulars call it the prettiest swimming beach in Massachusetts.
Wallis Sands State Beach (Rye, NH)
A broad, white-sand state beach on the Rye coast framed by rock jetties, with unusually clear water and views out to the Isles of Shoals. Yankee Magazine names it one of the ten prettiest beaches in New England.
Wingaersheek Beach (Gloucester)
At the meeting of the Annisquam River and Ipswich Bay, where low tide reveals a half mile of sandbars, tide pools, and climbable granite boulders with the lighthouse across the channel. The water glows a crystal blue rare for New England.
Horseneck Beach (Westport)
Two miles of open barrier beach facing Rhode Island Sound, with serious dunes, salt marsh, and a paved shoreline path through the 600-acre state reservation. The scenery-first choice on the South Coast, about 70 minutes out.
Devereux Beach (Marblehead)
On the causeway to Marblehead Neck, with open ocean out front and a sailboat-filled, tree-lined cove across the street. A classic Marblehead picture in every direction.
Duxbury Beach
A long, quiet barrier beach reached over the wooden Powder Point Bridge, with Cape Cod Bay on one side and salt marsh on the other. A South Shore favorite for unhurried walks and big horizons.
Nantasket Beach (Hull)
A long Atlantic strand on the Hull peninsula with shallow tide pools, clean swimming water, and a Boston skyline view, plus a 1928 carousel surviving from the old Paragon Park. You can even arrive by ferry from Long Wharf.
Plum Island (Newburyport)
A barrier island of wild dunes and tidal marsh shared with the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, where more than 350 bird species draw birders year round. A beach walk here feels a world away from the city.
