Notre Dame Victory March
Composed in 1908 by alumni brothers Michael and John Shea and immortalized by Rudy, the Four Horsemen, and a century of broadcasts. Historian Beano Cook called it the fourth most famous song in America, behind only the national anthem, Happy Birthday, and White Christmas.
The Victors (Michigan)
Written by student Louis Elbel in 1898 after a last-minute upset of Chicago, and first performed publicly by John Philip Sousa, who reportedly called it the greatest college march ever written. Every ranked source in this consensus puts it first or second.
Boomer Sooner (Oklahoma)
Arthur M. Alden borrowed Yale's Boola Boola in 1905 and gave it the lyrics that rattle Norman every fall Saturday. During a 1983 comeback the band was told to play it until Oklahoma led, roughly 300 times.
Fight On (USC)
Written by dental student Milo Sweet in 1922 for a Trojan spirit contest, and now both USC's battle cry and its unofficial motto. Legend holds it blared from a US warship during a World War II island assault.
Rocky Top (Tennessee)
Boudleaux and Felice Bryant dashed it off in about ten minutes in 1967, and it became a Billboard country hit, an official Tennessee state song, and the most played tune in Neyland Stadium. Not the official fight song, just the one everyone came to hear.
Bow Down to Washington
Lester Wilson's 1915 student contest winner still booms across Lake Washington when the Huskies score. A vintage West Coast march with one of the most commanding openings in the genre.
Tiger Rag (Clemson)
A 1917 Original Dixieland Jass Band number that Clemson's bandmaster bought as sheet music in Atlanta for $1.50 and adopted in 1942. They call it The Song That Shakes the Southland.
Aggie War Hymn (Texas A&M)
Originally titled Good-bye to Texas University and adopted in 1920, it powers the Kyle Field sway that physically rocks the stadium. Less a song than a 12th Man ritual.
On, On, U of K (Kentucky)
Kentucky's century-old rallying march does double duty, driving football Saturdays at Kroger Field and basketball winters at Rupp Arena. The Fan's 2025 countdown ranks it a startling sixth of fifty.
Buckeye Battle Cry (Ohio State)
Frank Crumit's 1919 contest winner is one of Ohio State's two official fight songs and the soundtrack of the band's famous ramp entrance into Ohio Stadium. The team sings it to the crowd after every home win.
