The full ranking
Cash-only, no-frills, and proudly unchanged. San Diego's dive bars have been pouring cheap drinks since 1933 and have no plans to update the jukebox.
Aero Club Bar (Middletown)
San Diego's original whiskey bar since 1947, opened by pioneering pilot Mariam Profit as a watering hole for aviators and aircraft workers. Aviation memorabilia and red leather booths frame a whiskey selection of over 1,000 bottles that rivals any dedicated whiskey bar in the country.
Waterfront Bar & Grill (Little Italy)
San Diego's oldest tavern, open since 1933, the year Prohibition was repealed, and still holding the city's oldest full liquor license. It was born as a refuge for the Italian and Portuguese fishermen who worked the tuna fleets anchored off the nearby Embarcadero, and the trophy swordfish on the wall and the fishing nets overhead have not moved since.
High Dive (Bay Park)
Bay Park's upscale dive since 2006, known as much for its burgers, short rib nachos, and weekend brunch pancakes as for its 20 taps of local craft beer and tiki cocktails. The outdoor patio, pinball machines, and rotating themed nights (Birria Wednesdays, Fried Chicken Fridays) keep it full every night of the week.
Live Wire (North Park)
A North Park institution since 1992, Live Wire was one of San Diego's first bars to champion craft beer and built its identity around a jukebox stocked with old punk, garage, and soul. Year-round Christmas lights, jackalope taxidermy, and ephemera from bands like Rocket from the Crypt give the interior its particular brand of collected chaos.
Star Bar (Gaslamp)
One of downtown's most recognized dive bars, turning 50 this decade, Star Bar holds its own in the Gaslamp with an uncommonly serious whiskey selection, original cocktails, and reputedly the cheapest cold beer in the district. Pool, pinball, an outdoor patio, and a pet-friendly policy make it feel like a neighborhood bar dropped inside one of the Strip's more commercial quarters.
Silver Fox (Pacific Beach)
Pacific Beach's legendary dive since 1975, voted Best Dive Bar and Best Happy Hour 2024 by San Diego Magazine, the Silver Fox is a women-owned basement bar at the bottom of a flight of stairs on Garnet Ave. Wall-to-wall cheetah-print carpet, a classic rock jukebox, free pool on weekdays, and the legendary 6 AM Club, where the first customer through the door each morning receives a rubber bracelet and bragging rights.
The Kraken (Cardiff-by-the-Sea)
Serving cold beer and rock-and-roll since 1976 on South Coast Highway 101, The Kraken is a coastal dive with ocean views, surfboard decor, and live music every night of the week. Cheap drinks, an outdoor patio with pool tables, and a rotating roster of classic rock and punk bands keep it resolutely, authentically local.
The Lamplighter (Mission Hills)
A cash-only Mission Hills institution open since 6 AM daily, The Lamplighter is about the size of a living room and has been the go-to bar for Hillcrest and Mission Hills regulars for over three decades. San Diego CityBeat ranked it the number one karaoke bar in the city, and nightly karaoke starting at 9:15 makes it one of the most genuinely participatory dives in town.
Pacific Shores (Ocean Beach)
Family-owned since 1952, when two tuna fishermen bought the bar on Newport Ave, Pacific Shores is a Ocean Beach treasure with underwater-themed decor, black lights that make gin and tonics glow, and drinks priced as they might have been in 1975. The classic jukebox, free catered food on Friday happy hour, and the cash-only policy are pure Ocean Beach and proudly unchanged.
The Beachcomber (Mission Beach)
A Mission Beach bar with roots going back to the 1940s, the Beachcomber runs a full weekly calendar, from Monday bingo to Tuesday trivia to Thursday dueling pianos to Sunday afternoon live classic rock. The Guinness pour earns repeated praise, and the eclectic crowd, ranging from college students to sixty-year regulars, is as much a part of the atmosphere as the bar itself.
