Bowery Ballroom (Lower East Side)
A 575-capacity venue in a converted 1929 shoe store, named by Rolling Stone in 2013 as the best club in America. Intimate enough to feel like a living room, with sightlines and sound quality that larger venues cannot match.
Mercury Lounge (Lower East Side)
A 250-capacity room on Houston Street that has served as a launching pad for indie rock acts since 1993. The tight space and no-frills approach keep the focus entirely on the music.
Birdland Jazz Club (Theater District)
Named for Charlie Parker, the original Birdland opened in 1949 and hosted Sinatra, Miles Davis, and Thelonious Monk. The current Theater District incarnation, open since 1986 and moved to West 44th Street in 1996, added a state-of-the-art 140-seat theater in 2018.
Village Vanguard (West Village)
The oldest continuously operating jazz club in New York City, open since 1935 in a triangular basement on Seventh Avenue South. The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra has held its Monday night residency here since 1966, and the room's acoustics are considered sacred.
Terra Blues (Greenwich Village)
A 30+ year Bleecker Street blues bar and music room serving live blues seven nights a week. Locals call it the most reliable place in the Village to catch top-tier blues without a cover charge during early sets, with great sightlines and a long bar.
Music Hall of Williamsburg (Williamsburg)
A 550-capacity converted factory space in Williamsburg managed by the same team as Bowery Ballroom, with the same commitment to sound quality in a room that attracts acts just past the Mercury Lounge stage of their careers.
Arlene's Grocery (Lower East Side)
A former bodega turned Lower East Side rock club that gave early stages to The Strokes and Lady Gaga. Monday night's live-band Rock 'n' Roll Karaoke remains a downtown rite of passage.
Baby's All Right (Williamsburg)
A 2013 bar, restaurant, and performance space in a former hot-dog factory on Broadway, drawing indie and electronic acts to a room the New York Times compared to a Wes Anderson-curated spaceship. SZA, Billie Eilish, and A$AP Rocky all played before they were headliners.
Pete's Candy Store (Williamsburg)
Williamsburg's original nightly live music venue, open since 1999 in a former general store and candy shop on Lorimer Street. Norah Jones, Vampire Weekend, Sufjan Stevens, and Sharon Van Etten all played the tiny back-room stage before they were known.
Blue Note Jazz Club (Greenwich Village)
Danny Bensusan opened the Blue Note in 1981 and is credited with reviving jazz in New York City by presenting legends like Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson in an upscale, intimate format. It has since expanded to Tokyo, Osaka, and Milan.
