Johnny's Bar
Named for a beloved neighborhood regular who lived above the bar, this cramped, sticker-plastered West Village dive opened in 1990 with no name and never needed much of one. A shot-of-the-day special and a genuine locals-first policy make it one of the few truly affordable rooms left in the neighborhood.
The Four-Faced Liar
Named after the clock tower in Shandon, County Cork, this unpretentious Irish pub on West 4th has become the village local that the neighborhood never knew it needed. Trad sessions on Wednesdays, board games on the tables, and Guinness pulled at proper temperature set it apart from every fake-Irish bar around it.
Kettle of Fish
Dylan, Ochs, and Dave Van Ronk used to climb upstairs from The Gaslight Cafe between sets and end up here trading songs, gossip, and arguments. Today the bar doubles as a Green Bay Packer outpost, but the wood-paneled rooms and folk-era weight still feel intact.
Julius'
New York City's oldest continuously operating gay bar traces its roots to the 1860s, and the 1966 Sip-In here helped establish the legal right of gay people to be served in licensed premises. A designated city landmark, it's one of the most historically significant rooms in American bar culture.
Down the Hatch
A basement dive on West 4th that has been serving the Village since 1991, with cheap wings that earned a Best Wings NYC nod and an Unlimited Basement Brunch that regulars schedule their Sundays around. Eleven flat screens, beer pong, and a dog's-eye view of historic foot traffic outside.
PubKey
The country's most prominent Bitcoin bar occupies a 1930s storefront on Washington Place, where a checkered floor, exposed brick, and a century-old tin ceiling frame weekly free events on the full spectrum of Bitcoin culture. The burger is widely called one of the city's best.
The Library
A true post-punk basement dive on Avenue A since the early 1990s, unchanged in spirit if not in lease. B-movie projections, a crowd-pleasing jukebox, and hours that run to 4 AM keep it on the short list for anyone who needs a no-nonsense room after midnight.
Bleecker Street Bar
Opened as a neighborhood gathering place at Bleecker and Crosby in 1990, the bar relocated to the landmarked Banner Building at 648 Broadway after the pandemic and has been serving NoHo ever since. Three-plus decades of old-fashioned conviviality make it one of the more durable bars the Village has produced.
Peculier Pub
Established in 1987 and self-described as New York City's first beer bar, Peculier Pub stocks over 350 bottles and 27 draft lines inside walls covered in hand-laid mosaic tile art inspired by Munch, van Gogh, and the Sistine Chapel. An eccentric, singular room on a block that changes every five years.
124 Old Rabbit Club
Descend through an unmarked door on MacDougal Street into a dark, graffiti-covered basement devoted to serious craft and import beer, with over 70 options ranging from Bavarian rarities to Brooklyn collaborations hitting 17% ABV. A beer-geek hideout that takes its anonymity seriously, cash only.
