George Bang Bang (Koreatown)
Hidden behind Koreatown soup specialist Okdongsik, this Prohibition saloon goes all in: oil lamps flicker along the bar, big-band jazz spins on a record player, and vintage trunks stand in for tables. Time Out's top NYC speakeasy for 2026, pouring sweet, botanical, perfume-like cocktails.
The Woo Woo (Times Square)
A password-required hideaway reached through a Times Square sex shop, all red neon, blue velvet booths and edgy old-school glamour. The highest-rated room on the list at 4.7 on Google, flirty and theatrical with a strict dress code and a 90-minute table limit.
Attaboy (Lower East Side)
No sign, no menu: pull the metal 'AB' door and tell the bartenders what you like. Sam Ross and Michael McIlroy's Milk & Honey successor remains a cocktail-world benchmark, tiny, candlelit and worth the inevitable wait for a seat.
Little Branch (West Village)
Sasha Petraske's basement classic sits down a plain brown door on 7th Ave South, where tie-clad bartenders treat cocktail history as gospel. Quiet, cave-like and disciplined, with live jazz some nights and bespoke drinks made to order.
Please Don't Tell (East Village)
The phone-booth-inside-a-hot-dog-joint bar that launched NYC's speakeasy era in 2007. Seated-only and seriously crafted, PDT helped normalize the word 'mixologist' and still turns out inventive, precise drinks in a cozy, clubby nook.
Saint Tuesday (Tribeca)
Down Tribeca's cinematic Cortlandt Alley and into the Walker Hotel, this subterranean room pairs confident classics with nightly live jazz. Polished and modern rather than a Prohibition museum, it's a calm way to open an evening.
The Little Shop (South Street Seaport)
Slide open a door at the back of the Seaport's premier bodega and find a mellow speakeasy of mismatched rugs and armchairs. Intricate cocktails (try the rum and banana) arrive with Pringles-and-gummy-bear snacks, good for a 4.6 on Google.
The Up & Up (Greenwich Village)
A dim, sophisticated basement lounge on MacDougal in the former Gaslight Café, once a Beat Generation haunt. Wildly creative drinks from a talented bar team make it a banquette-lined respite from the street-level chaos above.
Apothéke (Chinatown)
Set in a former Doyers Street opium den, Apothéke casts its bartenders as white-coated pharmacists mixing 'prescriptions' grouped by effect. A cavernous antique-apothecary hideaway that is one of Chinatown's most photogenic nights out.
The Garret (West Village)
Climb the staircase at the back of a Five Guys on Bleecker to a handsome, exposed-brick cocktail bar. Lively and crowd-pleasing with a strong, unfussy drinks list, it's the most casual 'secret' on the list, and yes, get the burger first.
