Old Colony Tap (Provincetown)
Open since 1944 on Commercial Street, this is Provincetown's oldest surviving dive, its walls scorched with driftwood carvings by a local artist and hung with murals, glass floats, and a WWII life preserver. Anthony Bourdain popped in for Wellfleet oysters and called it a place where fishermen eat.
19th Hole Tavern (Hyannis)
Hyannis's oldest drinking establishment has been pouring since 1930, wearing its Irish pride on the ceiling and its Boston sports loyalties on every wall. Jack Kerouac was once a regular, which feels right for a bar this stubbornly indifferent to changing fashions.
The Underground (Provincetown)
A lively basement bar on Commercial Street with an original copper bar top inlaid with old P-town photographs and trinkets, the Underground is as much a community scrapbook as a drinking spot. DJs and dance nights keep it running late into the season.
The Fox Hole (Osterville)
A $5 annual membership buys you into this Veterans Association bar on Main Street, where cheap drinks, free popcorn, and a foosball table make it the most democratic room in Osterville. The regulars are year-rounders in madras and Nantucket red, and there is no sign on the door.
Bomb Shelter (Wellfleet)
Set in an actual basement directly across from Mayo Beach, this cash-only Wellfleet pub earns its name with the bunker feeling you get the moment you descend the stairs. No food, pool tables, a two-story summer patio, and prices that match the no-frills ethos.
Chatham Squire (Chatham)
Since 1968, the Squire has been Chatham's most iconic gathering place, with a rowdy tavern on the east side and a family dining room on the west serving locally sourced chowder, steamers, and raw bar. Boston Magazine named it Best Bar in 2007.
Sundancer's (West Dennis)
A waterfront bar and restaurant on Bass River since 1983, Sundancer's packs in the summer crowd with nightly live entertainment, lobster rolls as big as the dining room, and an outdoor deck that makes the Cape's flat light feel almost tropical. It leans more roadhouse than dive, but the prices never pretend otherwise.
Quarterdeck Lounge (Hyannis)
Every wall and the ceiling are covered with the owners' curated collection of memorabilia and art, giving this Iyannough Road dive the feel of an eccentric captain's quarters. Two billiard tables, strong martinis at fair prices, and bartenders who will remember your drink.
Duck Inn Pub (Hyannis)
A self-described upscale dive bar on Hyannis Main Street with eight beers on tap, live entertainment with no cover, and a covered patio overlooking the street action. The buy-one-get-one daily from 11:30 AM to 2 PM is the kind of deal that should not exist this close to the water.
Four Point Tavern (Hyannis)
Tucked into the Hyannis Inn on Main Street, the Four Point Tavern decorates its walls with local art and Cape Cod memorabilia and pours a rotating lineup of local craft beers alongside handcrafted cocktails. A quieter anchor at the end of a sometimes-rowdy Main Street strip.
