Kermit's Tremé Mother-in-Law Lounge (Tremé)
Trumpeter Kermit Ruffins's technicolor Tremé clubhouse, the old Ernie K-Doe lounge, where red beans simmer, the grill smokes out back, and brass and R&B fill a mural-covered room. Pure New Orleans neighborhood joy.
Tipitina's (Uptown)
The legendary Uptown music hall founded in 1977 to give Professor Longhair a stage, now musician-owned and still hosting the city's best brass, funk and Sunday fais do-do. The banana-draped shrine of New Orleans live music.
Bacchanal Wine (Bywater)
A Bywater wine shop and backyard where you pick a bottle inside and carry it to a string-lit courtyard for live jazz nightly, with a chef-driven small-plates menu upstairs. The most romantic music yard in the city.
Three Muses (Marigny)
A snug Frenchmen Street bar and kitchen pairing live jazz with global small plates and serious cocktails. Intimate, reservation-friendly, and a calmer way to hear music on the strip.
d.b.a. (Marigny)
A craft-beer and whiskey bar on Frenchmen with one of the city's best booking calendars, from the Treme Brass Band to legendary Monday-night residencies. Serious drinks, serious music, low pretension.
Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro (Marigny)
The city's premier modern-jazz listening room just off Frenchmen, with two seated sets a night and a roster that has long included the Marsalis and Neville families. A proper jazz club, with a bistro attached.
Blue Nile (Marigny)
One of the longest-running clubs on Frenchmen, with a street-level showroom and a balcony room upstairs, booking funk, brass, soul and reggae most nights. A reliable spot for a late, sweaty set.
Vaughan's Lounge (Bywater)
A ramshackle Bywater corner bar long synonymous with Kermit Ruffins, whose Thursday-night trumpet sets and free red beans made it a local legend. Christmas lights, a tin ceiling, and brass that spills into the street.
