Club Passim (Cambridge)
The legendary Harvard Square folk room where Joan Baez and a young Bob Dylan once played, still hosting nightly singer-songwriters in a tiny, candlelit, listening-first basement. A nonprofit institution and the heart of New England folk.
The Lizard Lounge (Cambridge)

The Lilypad (Cambridge)

The Beehive (South End)
A bohemian, two-level South End restaurant and bar where live jazz and cabaret play nightly beneath chandeliers and graffiti. Equal parts supper club and music room, and always buzzing.
The Middle East (Cambridge)
The Central Square institution that launched a thousand bands, a sprawling restaurant-and-club complex of Upstairs, Downstairs, Corner and ZuZu rooms booking everything from punk to hip-hop. A pillar of the Boston rock scene since the 1970s.
The Plough and Stars (Cambridge)
A 50-year-old Cambridge pub the size of a living room, with bands wedged in the corner most nights and a legendary traditional Irish session. Cold pints, no stage, all atmosphere.
Midway Café (Jamaica Plain)
A no-frills JP dive booking an eclectic mix of rock, soul and funk plus some of the city's longest-running queer dance nights. Cheap, welcoming, and fiercely community-run.
The Burren (Somerville)
Davis Square's beloved Irish pub, founded by trad musicians Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello, with sessions up front and full bands in the Backroom. Somerville's live-music anchor.
Toad (Cambridge)
The pint-sized Porter Square watering hole, reborn in 2025 under the Burren team, with free live music seven nights a week. Blues, singer-songwriters and rock packed into a room with no stage and no cover.
Wally's Cafe Jazz Club (South End)
One of the oldest family-owned jazz clubs in the country, open since 1947 and serving live jazz 365 nights a year. A cramped, sweaty South End shrine where Berklee students and legends trade solos.
