U Zlatého Tygra (Staré Město)
Prague's most storied beerhouse, hidden on Husova Street, pouring impeccably tapped Pilsner Urquell to a fiercely local crowd. The haunt of writer Bohumil Hrabal, and the spot Václav Havel brought Bill Clinton to taste a real Czech pub.
Vzorkovna Dog Bar (Nové Město)
A labyrinthine underground dive off Národní, all candlelight, painted vaults, foosball and graffiti, named after the owner's Irish wolfhound that roams the room. Cheap drinks, live music and an unpolished, bohemian crowd well past midnight.
U Vystřeleného Oka (Žižkov)
The Shot-Out Eye, a legendary rough-edged Žižkov dive named for the one-eyed Hussite general on the hill above. Cheap beer, a mixed crowd of locals, students and backpackers, and zero tourist polish.
Pivnice U Černého Vola (Hradčany)
One of the last authentic beer halls by Prague Castle, on Loretánské náměstí, run as a plain, old-fashioned local with Pilsner Urquell and Kozel on tap. Bare wooden tables, basic snacks, and a genuine beer-hall roar.
Baráčnická Rychta (Malá Strana)
A quiet old-Prague pub tucked above the U.S. Embassy in Malá Strana, tied to an old Czech civic-association tradition. Goulash, roast duck and svíčková with beer, away from the rush of the main tourist streets.
Bukowski's Bar (Žižkov)
A dark, decadent Žižkov bar named for the hard-drinking American poet, candlelit and curtained with a no-frills, anything-goes attitude. A bohemian late-night favourite where the spirits list runs deep.
Hostinec U Kocoura (Malá Strana)
A compact, long-running pub on Nerudova Street on the climb to Prague Castle, no longer a secret but still a proper Czech beer stop. Bernard, Budvar and Pilsner on tap in a cramped, convivial room.
Pivnice U Sadu (Žižkov)
The beating heart of Žižkov pub life on Škroupovo náměstí, a cluttered, characterful local crammed with bric-a-brac and open from morning until very late. Cheap beer, big portions, and a crowd that never thins.
U Hrocha (Malá Strana)
A tiny, authentic local below Prague Castle on Thunovská, with plain wooden tables, brisk service and excellent Pilsner. Small and beloved by beer lovers, so a seat is hard won.
U Sudu (Nové Město)
A deceptively small wine-and-absinthe bar on Vodičkova that opens into a sprawling medieval cellar labyrinth of rooms, with a retro piano and table football. A late-night warren travelers get happily lost in.
