Bo-Bi Bar (Indre By)
Copenhagen's most beloved bodega, barely changed since 1917: rich reds, lamplight, old paintings, and some of the cheapest beer in the centre. A writers' haunt by afternoon that fills with a younger crowd by night, where a boiled egg passes for bar food.
Eiffel Bar (Christianshavn)
A god-honest smoky boozer on Wildersgade with cut-glass Paris mirrors and an old sailors' past, pouring beer among the cheapest in town. Open 9am to 3am daily, it is Christianshavn's last true dive.
Frederik VI (Frederiksberg)
Frederiksberg's living room since 1973, on tree-lined Frederiksberg Allé, equal parts proper brown pub and lunch spot. Lazy afternoon pints slide into lively evenings, with a hidden summer back garden most visitors never find.
Hviids Vinstue (Indre By)
Copenhagen's oldest bar, established 1723 on Kongens Nytorv, with a strict no-music policy so conversation is the only soundtrack. Famous for its November gløgg and 27 Danish beers under candlelit, dark-wood ceilings.
Café Haraldsborg (Islands Brygge)
About as typical a Danish brown pub as exists, run by a husband-and-wife team with friendly regulars on Islands Brygge. Smoking permitted, retro beer signage and low lamps, and a cosy calm that sparks to life at night.
Floss (Indre By)
A late-night stalwart on Larsbjørnsstræde with punk attitude, from the smoky ground-floor bar to a graffiti-strewn basement games room. Cheap, loud, and gloriously unpretentious in the heart of the Latin Quarter.
Woodstock (Christiania)
The social drinking epicentre of Freetown Christiania, a sturdy wooden hall decorated in full dropout style with reasonable prices. On summer evenings the colourfully lit terrace is essential, sounds and smells drifting across the commune.
Studenterhuset (Indre By)
Run by and for students near the Round Tower, this budget favourite pours some of the cheapest pints in the centre, no student card required. Live music nights and a buzzing, talk-to-strangers crowd.
Toga Vinstue (Indre By)
A legendary central brown pub where Danish political debate runs hottest and young and old mix in a way that is increasingly rare. A classic lunch restaurant by day, a raucous debate club by night.
Cafe Petersborg (Indre By)
History seeps from the walls of this 1750s bodega on Bredgade, once the haunt of Russian sailors from St. Petersburg. Four intimate wood-raftered rooms, handwritten bills, and exceptional traditional Danish food at fair prices.
