Blue Bird (Historic Centre)
A hidden classic on pedestrian Ipitou Street where bartenders in waistcoats pour stiff drinks without a hint of mixology theatre.
Juan Rodriguez Bar (Psirri)
A baroque-tropical Psirri room of patterned tiles, chandeliers, and rum drinks, equal parts Havana and Athens. Loud, gorgeous, packed.
Galaxy Bar (Historic Centre)
A 1972 wood-lined bar tucked in a Stadiou arcade, where the owner greets regulars by name and the gin comes with a saucer of nuts. A protected species of bar.
Falaina (Exarchia)
A whale-marked Exarchia dive with cheap drinks, mismatched art, and the neighborhood's anarchic charm intact. The name means whale in Greek, and the room swallows students, artists, and old-timers alike until late.
Cafe Varnava (Pangrati)
An all-day kafeneio on Varnava Square that slides into a neighborhood bar after dark, with tables on the plateia and rakomelo in winter.
Rudu Bar (Petralona)
A Petralona music dive with a loyal local crowd, good records, and prices that encourage staying. The Athens neighborhood bar formula, perfected.
