Serial killers, insomniac anarchists, and the birth of Facebook, all shot with surgical precision. The films of one of the most exacting directors working, ranked.
The Social Network (2010)
Fincher's best-reviewed film and Rotten Tomatoes' number one at 96%, an Aaron Sorkin-scripted origin story of Facebook that turns depositions and code into riveting drama. Three Oscars and a generation-defining film.
Se7en (1995)
The relentlessly grimy serial-killer masterpiece that announced Fincher's style: muted, rain-soaked, and nihilistic, with one of cinema's most infamous endings. The audience favorite that tops Letterboxd's Fincher ranking.
Fight Club (1999)
The anarchic, era-defining adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's novel, a soap-salesman fever dream that flopped on release and became a cult landmark. Fincher's highest-rated film on IMDb at 8.8.
Gone Girl (2014)
A dark, stylish marriage thriller from Gillian Flynn's novel, with a career-best Rosamund Pike as the unknowable Amy. Fincher at his sickest and most controlled, a critical and commercial smash.
Zodiac (2007)
Widely considered Fincher's masterpiece, an obsessive, procedural recreation of the hunt for the Zodiac killer that values dread and detail over gore. The connoisseur's pick and a top-two on every critics' list.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Fincher's brutal, icy adaptation of the Stieg Larsson thriller, anchored by a fully committed, Oscar-nominated Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander. Lurid Hitchcockian craft at its sharpest.
The Game (1997)
A paranoid, twist-laden thriller with Michael Douglas as a banker whose life unravels into an elaborate, possibly deadly game. An underrated showcase of Fincher's iron grip on atmosphere.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)
Fincher's most sentimental film, a Best Picture nominee about a man who ages backward, carried by groundbreaking de-aging effects and a Cate Blanchett performance. The outlier in his nihilistic filmography.
The Killer (2023)
A coolly methodical Netflix assassin thriller with Michael Fassbender as a hitman whose meticulous philosophy keeps failing him. Late-period Fincher on firm, stylish footing.
Mank (2020)
Fincher's black-and-white love letter to old Hollywood, following screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz as he writes Citizen Kane. A sharp, brilliantly performed passion project that won two Oscars.
