Zermatt (Valais, Switzerland)
The Matterhorn Ski Paradise peaks at nearly 4,000 meters and offers the only year-round glacier skiing in the Alps, with terrain that crosses into Italy at Klein Matterhorn. The car-free village, framed by the iconic 4,478-meter pyramid of the Matterhorn, sets a visual standard no other resort can match.
Verbier (Valais, Switzerland)
Verbier's four interconnected valleys of the 4 Vallees offer some of the Alps' most demanding off-piste terrain alongside a legendary apres-ski scene centered on the Farinet bar and the Farm Club. Val Thorens (Savoie, France)
Europe's highest ski resort, sitting at 2,300 meters at village level, Val Thorens is the centerpiece of the Trois Vallees, the world's largest interconnected ski domain. Guaranteed snow coverage from November through May and fast modern lifts make it the most reliably skiable destination in the Alps.
Courchevel (Savoie, France)
The most prestigious address in French skiing, Courchevel 1850 concentrates more Michelin-starred restaurants, palace-class hotels, and private chalet luxury than anywhere else in the Alps. The five interconnected villages share access to the vast Trois Vallees, but the 1850 village is the apex of European ski glamour.
Arosa Lenzerheide (Graubünden, Switzerland)
Two historic resorts connected by a single gondola in 2013, Arosa Lenzerheide offers 225 kilometers of runs in the Graubunden canton with a quieter, more family-oriented character than the Valais megaResorts. The Arosa side is home to Europe's first and only bear sanctuary and ski resort combination.
Chamonix-Mont Blanc (Haute-Savoie, France)
The birthplace of alpine skiing and home of the world's most famous off-piste route, the 22-kilometer Vallee Blanche glacier descent, Chamonix sits in the shadow of Mont Blanc, Western Europe's highest peak at 4,808 meters. The Aiguille du Midi cable car lifts skiers to 3,842 meters for terrain that separates the committed from the casual.
St. Anton am Arlberg (Tyrol, Austria)
The birthplace of modern alpine ski technique, where Hannes Schneider pioneered the Arlberg method in the 1920s, St. Anton combines legendary steep and deep terrain with one of the Alps' most raucous apres-ski scenes. The Mooserwirt and Krazy Kanguruh bars at the bottom of the Galzigbahn are institutions of European ski culture.
Sölden (Tyrol, Austria)
Home to the only ski resort on earth with three mountains above 3,000 meters, Sölden's glacier skiing, high-altitude circuit, and dramatic Bond-film scenery (the 007 Elements exhibition sits atop Gaislachkogl) make it one of Austria's most architecturally spectacular destinations. The Big 3 circuit, linking Tiefenbachferner, Rettenbach, and the village glacier, covers terrain unlike anything in the Tyrol.
Cortina d'Ampezzo (Veneto, Italy)
The undisputed queen of the Dolomites, Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and returns for the 2026 Games, offering spectacular pink-rock scenery and a resort town with the most stylish main corso in Italian skiing. The skiing spans five separate ski areas in the Dolomiti Superski domain, and the Faloria and Tofana sectors offer both dramatic views and technical challenges.
