The Godfather (1972)

Citizen Kane (1941)
Orson Welles's debut feature follows a reporter piecing together the life of a dead newspaper tycoon through flashbacks. Its innovations in deep-focus cinematography, non-linear narrative, and low-angle composition rewrote the grammar of filmmaking.
Vertigo (1958)
Alfred Hitchcock's psychosexual thriller stars James Stewart as an acrophobic detective manipulated into obsession with a mysterious woman. Long underrated, it topped the Sight and Sound greatest-films poll in 2012.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Frank Darabont's adaptation of a Stephen King novella follows an unjustly imprisoned banker who refuses to lose hope over two decades inside. It holds the top spot on IMDb's all-time user ratings.
The Dark Knight (2008)
Christopher Nolan's second Batman film is held together by Heath Ledger's anarchic, Oscar-winning Joker, transforming a superhero sequel into a crime film of Shakespearean moral weight. It remains the highest-rated superhero film on any major critical index.
Tokyo Story (1953)
Yasujiro Ozu's masterpiece follows an elderly couple who travel to visit their adult children and are met with polite indifference. Its still camera, tatami-level framing, and quiet emotional devastation have influenced filmmakers from Wim Wenders to Jim Jarmusch.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Stanley Kubrick's philosophical science-fiction epic charts humanity's relationship with technology from prehistoric bone tools to a mysterious monolith orbiting Jupiter. Its practical special effects and classical score set a standard that has never been surpassed.

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Irvin Kershner's middle chapter of the original trilogy is the darkest and most dramatically complete, introducing Yoda, the AT-AT walkers, and the revelation that reshapes the entire saga. Widely considered the finest entry in the Star Wars franchise.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Quentin Tarantino's interlocking crime anthology reinvented indie cinema with its fractured chronology, machine-gun dialogue, and a cast that includes John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, and Uma Thurman. It won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
