2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
From bone to spaceship in one cut, the most famous edit in cinema. Kubrick's space odyssey remains the genre's towering achievement, a film built to be experienced rather than explained.
Dr. Strangelove (1964)
The end of the world played as farce, with Peter Sellers in three roles and Slim Pickens riding the bomb. Still the sharpest comedy ever made about the machinery of annihilation.
Paths of Glory (1957)
Kirk Douglas defends three soldiers tried for cowardice after a suicidal attack ordered by their own generals. Kubrick's WWI drama is the angriest and most humane film he ever made.
The Shining (1980)
An empty hotel, a frozen maze, and all work and no play. Kubrick's horror landmark gets scarier with each rewatch, and its gliding Steadicam corridors changed film language.
Barry Lyndon (1975)
An Irish rogue climbs and falls through 18th-century Europe in candlelit frames composed like paintings. Dismissed on release, now widely held to be Kubrick's most beautiful film.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Alex and his droogs turned ultraviolence into a moral question the film refuses to answer for you. Banned, debated, and imitated for half a century.
The Killing (1956)
A racetrack heist told out of order, with a stopwatch's precision and a suitcase of doomed money. The 1956 noir that taught Tarantino and half of crime cinema how to structure a caper.
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Boot camp under Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, then the sniper-haunted ruins of Hue. Kubrick's Vietnam film splits cleanly in two, and both halves cut deep.
Spartacus (1960)
The slave-revolt epic where "I'm Spartacus" entered the language. Kubrick's only director-for-hire studio assignment, and still the thinking person's sword-and-sandal picture.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Kubrick's final film sends Tom Cruise on a nocturnal odyssey through jealousy, masks, and money. Widely misread in 1999, increasingly treated as a masterpiece since.
