Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Matthew Broderick winks at the camera through one perfect skipped school day, from Wrigley Field to the Art Institute to a parade float singing Twist and Shout. Hughes wrote and directed, and the joyride has never lost its charm.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
Steve Martin and John Candy fight their way home for Thanksgiving through every transit disaster Hughes could devise. The final scene lands a gut punch no other Hughes comedy attempts, and critics still call it his best fusion of farce and heart.
National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
Clark Griswold stays home for the holidays and Hughes turns suburban Christmas perfectionism into a demolition derby of lights, squirrels, and Cousin Eddie. Critics were lukewarm in 1989; it has since become an annual rewatch ritual.
Uncle Buck (1989)
John Candy's finest leading role, a cigar-chewing bachelor babysitting his brother's kids and flipping pancakes the size of hubcaps. The film also introduced Hughes to Macaulay Culkin, the kid he would write Home Alone around a year later.
Sixteen Candles (1984)
A sophomore whose family forgets her sixteenth birthday pines for the senior of her dreams. Hughes's directorial debut set the template for the modern teen movie, even if parts of its humor have aged roughly.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
The same blueprint transplanted to Manhattan, with a bigger booby-trap budget and a detour through the Plaza Hotel. Critics shrugged, but audiences made it one of 1992's biggest hits and a holiday staple in its own right.
Some Kind of Wonderful (1987)
Hughes rewrote Pretty in Pink with the genders flipped and the ending he wished he had kept. Plenty of fans of his teen cycle argue this quieter Eric Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson romance is the better movie.
