The Sopranos (1999)
David Chase's New Jersey mob saga invented prestige television, with James Gandolfini's Tony Soprano as the medium's defining antihero. Therapy sessions and whacked capos, elevated to high art.
The Wire (2002)
David Simon's five-season portrait of Baltimore, from the corners to City Hall to the newsroom, is the most novelistic show ever made. The critics' perennial pick for the greatest drama ever written.
Better Call Saul (2015)
The Breaking Bad prequel that grew into its equal, tracing Jimmy McGill's slow slide into Saul Goodman. Bob Odenkirk and Rhea Seehorn carried six seasons of immaculate, patient tragedy.
Game of Thrones (2011)

Chernobyl (2019)
Craig Mazin's five-hour account of the 1986 nuclear disaster carries the weight of history and the dread of horror. 'What is the cost of lies?' became an instant epitaph.
The West Wing (1999)
Aaron Sorkin's walk-and-talk White House remains the high-water mark of network-era idealism. Seven seasons of the Bartlet administration that political obsessives still quote daily.
True Detective (2014)
Rust Cohle and Marty Hart's seventeen-year Louisiana murder case made season one an instant classic of cosmic dread. The anthology has been chasing that high ever since.
