Best Movies Directed by Quentin Tarantino

Ten features, no misfires, and a body count to match. From the diner standoff of his debut to his Hollywood fairy tale, these are the crime sagas, revenge epics, and genre love letters that made Tarantino a brand unto himself.

  1. 1

    Pulp Fiction (1994)

The film that rewired American cinema: three interlocking LA crime stories told out of order, stuffed with diner philosophy, a dance contest, and a briefcase no one ever explains. Travolta, Jackson, and Thurman anchor Tarantino's Palme d'Or-winning masterpiece.

  2. 2

    Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Tarantino's lean, ferocious debut: a diamond heist gone wrong, told almost entirely in the bloody aftermath as color-coded crooks turn on each other in a warehouse. The ear scene still makes audiences flinch.

  3. 3

    Inglourious Basterds (2009)

A WWII revenge fantasy where a band of Jewish-American soldiers and a vengeful cinema owner rewrite history. Christoph Waltz won an Oscar as the silken, monstrous Hans Landa, and the opening dairy-farm interrogation is a master class in tension.

  4. 4

    Django Unchained (2012)

A freed slave turned bounty hunter blasts his way across the antebellum South to rescue his wife. Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and a vile Leonardo DiCaprio power Tarantino's blood-soaked, Oscar-winning spaghetti-western riff.

  5. 5

    Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

The Bride wakes from a coma and begins her roaring rampage of revenge. Volume 1 is Tarantino's neon martial-arts opera, climaxing with the House of Blue Leaves showdown against the Crazy 88.

  6. 6

    Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)

The talkier, western-tinged second half of the saga, trading swordplay for buried-alive dread and a final reckoning with Bill himself. David Carradine's monologues give the revenge tale its melancholy heart.

  7. 7

    Jackie Brown (1997)

Tarantino's most grown-up, soulful film: an Elmore Leonard adaptation with Pam Grier as a flight attendant playing a gunrunner and the feds against each other. Robert Forster earned an Oscar nod as the smitten bail bondsman.

  8. 8

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

Tarantino's wistful 1969 fairy tale follows a fading TV star and his stunt double through a changing Los Angeles, on a collision course with the Manson Family. DiCaprio and Brad Pitt make an irresistible double act.

  9. 9

    The Hateful Eight (2015)

Eight strangers wait out a Wyoming blizzard in a stagecoach stopover, and not all of them will leave. Shot in 70mm with an Ennio Morricone score, it is Tarantino's chamber-piece western soaked in paranoia and blood.

  10. 10

    Death Proof (2007)

Tarantino's grindhouse throwback pits a scarred stuntman and his killer muscle car against two groups of women. Half slasher, half car-chase thrill ride, it builds to one of the great vehicular showdowns on film.
