Hoop Dreams (1994)
Steve James's three-hour documentary follows two Chicago teenagers, William Gates and Arthur Agee, over five years as they chase NBA dreams from inner-city playgrounds to suburban prep schools. Considered by Roger Ebert the best film of the 1990s, it's a sociological epic on race, class, family, and the cruel attrition of pro-sports ambition.
Raging Bull (1980)
Martin Scorsese's monochrome boxing masterpiece. Robert De Niro's Oscar-winning, body-transforming turn as middleweight champ Jake LaMotta charts a fighter whose self-destructive rage destroys everything outside the ring. Michael Chapman's photography, Thelma Schoonmaker's editing, and Pietro Mascagni's intermezzo elevate the genre to opera.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
James Mangold's Le Mans drama about Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) building a Ford to topple Ferrari's 1966 dominance. The corporate gamesmanship in Dearborn and the white-knuckle racing at the Sarthe make it the best high-speed sports film of the streaming era.
Senna (2010)
Asif Kapadia's documentary about Brazilian Formula One legend Ayrton Senna, assembled almost entirely from archival cockpit footage, race coverage, and home video. A propulsive portrait of a driver of near-religious intensity that ends, devastatingly, on the 1994 Imola weekend — and that made the documentary form thrilling for a new audience.
When We Were Kings (1996)
Leon Gast's Oscar-winning chronicle of the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle, the heavyweight title fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire. Twenty-two years in the making, with on-the-ground reporting from Norman Mailer and George Plimpton, it's both a fight film and a study of Ali at the peak of his political and cultural power.
Rocky (1976)
Sylvester Stallone's screenplay, written in three days and sold on condition he star, became a Best Picture winner and a cultural icon. A small-time Philadelphia club fighter gets a million-to-one shot at the heavyweight champ; the Bill Conti horns, the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the final-round bell against Apollo Creed turned the underdog story into shorthand for the American dream.
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Clint Eastwood's Best Picture winner about a grizzled boxing trainer (Eastwood), his cornerman (Morgan Freeman), and the waitress (Hilary Swank) who insists on becoming his fighter. A pugilistic underdog story that turns, with shattering grace, into a meditation on faith, mortality, and what loyalty really costs. Three Oscars including Eastwood for direction, Swank for lead, and Freeman for support.
The Hustler (1961)
Robert Rossen's pool-hall classic, shot in real New York billiards rooms in stark black and white. Paul Newman's "Fast Eddie" Felson takes on Jackie Gleason's Minnesota Fats for the title of best pool player in America while a manager (George C. Scott) and a fragile lover (Piper Laurie) drag him toward and away from ruin. A character study disguised as a sports film.
The Wrestler (2008)
Darren Aronofsky's stripped-down character study of Randy "The Ram" Robinson (Mickey Rourke), a pro wrestler twenty years past his peak, scraping out match fees in New Jersey VFW halls. Rourke's bruised, devastating Oscar-nominated performance and Bruce Springsteen's title song made it the great drama about athletic afterlives.
Bull Durham (1988)
Ron Shelton's smart, sexy minor-league romantic comedy. Susan Sarandon's Annie Savoy, a literature-loving Durham Bulls groupie, chooses one player a season; this year she takes hotshot pitcher "Nuke" LaLoosh (Tim Robbins) while the team brings in journeyman catcher Crash Davis (Kevin Costner) to school him. The most quotable baseball movie ever made, and the rare adult sports romance Hollywood barely makes anymore.
