Washington's dive bars are the great equalizer in a city obsessed with status, the cash-only rooms where Hill staffers, artists, and lifelong residents drink cheap canned beer under flickering neon. They span the truly ancient, like Mount Pleasant's 1935 Raven Grill and Capitol Hill's Tune Inn, to scrappy newer favorites such as Bloomingdale's Showtime Lounge and Edgewood's Dew Drop Inn. Expect squirt-bottle cocktails at Dan's, jukeboxes, board games, friendly surliness, and zero pretension. These are neighborhood living rooms first, bars second, and they remain the soul of DC nightlife.
