Two Oscars, one unmistakable command. From the Civil War battlefields of Glory to the moral chaos of Training Day, the greatest films of America's most compelling screen actor.
Malcolm X
Spike Lee's epic biopic traces Malcolm X from street hustler through conversion to martyrdom, and Washington bestrides every phase with colossal authority. Al Pacino winning the Oscar over him remains one of the Academy's great oversights.
Crimson Tide
Washington as the voice of reason against Gene Hackman's hawkish captain in a nuclear submarine on the edge of triggering World War III. Tony Scott at his most taut, with Tarantino's uncredited dialogue crackling throughout.
Training Day
Washington won his second Oscar playing Detective Alonzo Harris, a corrupt cop showing a rookie the rules of lawless Los Angeles. Loose, predatory, terrifying fun from the only actor who could make a villain this watchable.
Devil in a Blue Dress
Carl Franklin's 1940s LA noir with Washington as Easy Rawlins, the accidental private detective navigating a city where his skin color raises the stakes of every door he knocks on. Silky and assured.
Glory
Washington's Oscar-winning supporting turn as Silas Trip, the escaped slave who enlists in the Civil War's first Black regiment, contains one of cinema's most powerful close-ups. A single tear says everything.
The Tragedy of Macbeth
Joel Coen's stark black-and-white Macbeth gave Washington his most surprising late-career role: a performance of quiet, restrained menace on a spare expressionist stage.
Inside Man
Spike Lee's best genre film: a Manhattan bank heist where Washington's detective can never quite catch up to Clive Owen's mastermind. A thriller with a moral twist, executed with style and wit.
Fences
August Wilson's Pulitzer-winning play given a film version directed by and starring Washington as Troy Maxson, a Pittsburgh garbage collector whose dreams curdled into resentment. He and Viola Davis are extraordinary.
The Hurricane
Washington earned an Oscar nomination playing Rubin Carter, the boxer who spent 20 years in prison for murders he didn't commit. Three decades of confinement and transformation are all in his face.
Man on Fire
A revenge thriller set in Mexico City in which Denzel Washington plays a burned-out ex-CIA operative who becomes a girl's bodyguard and then her unstoppable avenger after her kidnapping. Director Tony Scott's kinetic, fragmented visual style and Washington's smoldering intensity made it one of the defining action performances of his career.
