The full ranking
Carved-up wood booths, cheap drafts, and decades of game-day memories from Columbus to Athens to Oxford. The Buckeye State's essential campus dives.
Out-R-Inn (Ohio State)
A converted duplex house open since 1969, one block off High Street north of campus, with weathered wooden walls carved with the names and initials of five-plus decades of Ohio State students. The come-as-you-are atmosphere and off-the-beaten-path location have helped it outlast dozens of campus competitors.
Bier Stube (Ohio State)
A campus-area institution operating since 1966, relocated to King Avenue after its original High Street location was demolished for a high-rise, but largely unchanged in spirit. The Woody Hayes portrait, four-songs-per-dollar jukebox, and unchanged decor have survived the move.
Brick Street Bar (Miami University)
Oxford's biggest and most iconic venue, with an upper level, lower level, large dance floor, and outdoor area that fills wall to wall on themed nights ranging from karaoke to country. The quintessential Miami University college experience, running since the early bar days of the uptown strip.
Mac & Joe's (Miami University)
A classic Oxford dive that has served Miami University students for decades with the kind of straightforward bar program that requires no explanation: cheap beer, friendly regulars, and a predictable crowd on any Thursday through Saturday.
Smiling Skull Saloon (Ohio University)
A biker-bar-meets-college-bar hybrid on West Union Street in Athens, equal parts townie institution and OU hangout, with cheap PBRs, a pool table, and a booking calendar that punches above its size. Away from the Court Street noise, it rewards the short walk.
Skipper's Pub (Miami University)
A nautically themed Oxford pub that has carved out a loyal niche in the Miami University bar scene, offering a slightly quieter alternative to the larger venues while maintaining the cheap-beer ethos the neighborhood demands.
The Pigskin Bar & Grill (Ohio University)
A game-day anchor for Ohio Bobcats fans in Athens, with the expected wall of flat-screens and affordable pitchers alongside a grill menu that keeps the crowd fed through four-hour football marathons. The name says exactly what you're getting.
Thirsty Scholar (Ohio State)
A campus-area Columbus bar known for a better-than-average beer selection relative to its dive-bar prices, drawing a mix of students, grad students, and neighborhood regulars who appreciate the cross-category appeal.
Howard's Club H (BGSU)
A graffiti-walled Bowling Green institution that has anchored the local music scene for decades, hosting everyone from The Ramones to a pre-fame Fall Out Boy. Cheap beer, a free Thursday open mic, and live bands of every genre on weekends.
Tony's Tavern (Ohio University)
A long-standing Athens institution on or near Court Street known for its straight-ahead dive bar credentials, loyal local regulars, and cheap domestics that have made it a rite of passage for generations of Bobcats.
