Best Lobster Rolls in Maine

Three million traps along the coast, picnic tables on a working wharf, and butter from an old enamel kettle. Maine's lobster roll is the genre's purest expression.

  1. 1

    Bite Into Maine (Cape Elizabeth)

The Fort Williams Park food truck below Portland Head Light, with hefty sprinkles of chive, well-seasoned meat, and a barely griddled bun. The Maine and Connecticut classics share a menu with curry, wasabi, chipotle, and a picnic-style coleslaw version.

  2. 2

    Five Islands Lobster Co (Georgetown)

A working wharf in a genuine fishing village on Sheepscot Bay, where you can watch the boats unload the day's catch before ordering the Big Boy roll lightly dressed in mayo and overflowing the split-top bun. Bring your own beer and a Gifford's ice cream finish next door.

  3. 3

    McLoons Lobster Shack (South Thomaston)

The tiny red hut on Spruce Head Island with island views, mayo spread directly on the bun rather than tossed with the meat, and the option to add hot butter (you should). The lobsters come out of floating crates next to the dining patio.

  4. 4

    Eventide Oyster Co. (Portland)

The James Beard winner in Portland's Old Port turned the brown-butter lobster roll on a Chinese-style steamed bun into a Maine icon. The pillowy bao absorbs the browned butter while the chives brighten things up, served alongside one of the country's great oyster lists.

  5. 5

    Red's Eats (Wiscasset)

The little red shack on the Sheepscot River, a Down East perennial Best of Maine winner and probably the state's most famous lobster roll. A whole tail and knuckles dropped naked on a grilled split-top with butter or mayo on the side; the line is over an hour and worth it.

  6. 6

    Thurston's Lobster Pound (Bernard)

Two stories of yellow wood overlooking Bass Harbor at the quiet edge of Mount Desert Island, plump tender meat with a soft bun and a side of finely minced slaw. Skip the limp lettuce, keep the picturesque buoy wall and lobster boats out the window.

  7. 7

Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster Company (South Freeport)

A South Freeport wharf institution since 1970 with sweet lobster, a floppy-but-functional bun, and a lettuce-and-pickle setup that surprises in a basket of fries and slaw. Watch ferries head out to Casco Bay from picnic tables on the water.

  8. 8

    Bob's Clam Hut (Kittery)

A 1956 Route 1 institution and the first lobster stop crossing into Maine, on the Infatuation's 2025 short list. Cold lobster tossed with mayo on a perfectly griddled bun, no lettuce or garnishes interrupting the meat, with well-seasoned fries on the side.

  9. 9

    The Clam Shack (Kennebunk)

A tiny white shanty on the bridge over the Kennebunk River since 1968, Cape Porpoise lobster steamed in ocean water and served on a soft round yeast roll rather than the classic split-top. Mayo, butter, or both; bring patience for the midsummer line.

  10. 10

The Lobster Shack at Two Lights (Cape Elizabeth)

An open-air Cape Elizabeth landmark since the 1920s, picnic tables on the rocky shore below the lighthouse and fog horn, dollop of mayo on top or butter on the side. A perfectly sized roll with an excellent bun and a 180-degree view of the Atlantic.
