The full ranking
Philly doesn't have a single defining pizza style, and that's the point. Square Sicilians at Angelo's, Detroit-style at Circles + Squares and Down North, Joe Beddia's Northeastern hybrid in Fishtown, and Tacconelli's original tomato pie since 1946.
Angelo's Pizzeria (Bella Vista)
Danny DiGiampietro's cash-only South Philly counter is what locals name when asked about Philly pizza. Thick, saucy square pies layered with cheese under tomato sauce, and a beloved upside-down pie. The Infatuation scored it 9.1, the highest pizza score in Philadelphia, and Portnoy scored it the same.
Circles + Squares (Kensington)
Daniel Gutter's Kensington flagship serves what The Inquirer and Bon Appétit both call Philly's best Detroit-style: thick, frico-edged squares with caramelized cheese to the corners. Yelp reviewers rate it 4.8 across 128 ratings and Google reviewers 4.8 across 434, the highest aggregate score on this list.
Pizzeria Beddia (Fishtown)
Joe Beddia turned a no-phone Fishtown pop-up into the restaurant that put Philly on the national pizza map. His pies are Northeastern hybrids, thin and chewy with a careful char; the angry red arrabbiata is the sleeper hit. Robb Report ranked Beddia among the world's best pizzerias in 2026.
Pizza Jawn (Manayunk)
Craig LaBan called this Manayunk shop Philly's best new pizzeria when it opened in 2020, and Phil Lee still bakes three styles: a charred Neo-Neapolitan round, a Detroit pan, and a sesame-crusted Grandma square. Portnoy scored it 8.1; Google reviewers rate it 4.6 across 596 ratings.
Tacconelli's Pizzeria (Port Richmond)
Running one oven since 1946 in Port Richmond, Tacconelli's is Philly's living pizza history. Call ahead to reserve your dough, bring your own beer, and order the cheeseless tomato pie. Portnoy scored the original 8.1.
Pizzata Pizzeria (Fitler Square)
Vinny Gallagher and Davide Lubrano's Fitler Square shop bakes naturally leavened pies that sit between New York and Neapolitan. The crust crackles with a flavorful chew and roasty tang, per The Inquirer; Portnoy scored it 8.1.
Down North Pizza (Strawberry Mansion)
Muhammad Abdul-Hadi's Strawberry Mansion shop combines a cushiony Detroit-style pie named after Philly rappers with a mission to provide career opportunities and fair wages to formerly incarcerated people. The Infatuation calls it the best Detroit-style pizza in Philly.
Eda's Pizzeria (Manayunk)
Manayunk's New Haven-style outpost, where charred thin-crust pies emerge with classics like margherita and specials like potato-rosemary or clam-bacon. Portnoy scored it 8.1, tying it with the other top non-Detroit-style pies in town.
Stina (South Philly)
Bobby Saritsoglou's South Philly Mediterranean spot doesn't lead with pizza, but the compact, expertly crafted pies (including mortadella-pistachio and chermoula) are part of the case Resy makes for Stina. Google reviewers rate it 4.7 across 295 ratings.
Sally (Fitler Square)
Across from Fitler Square, this natural wine bar bakes pillowy sourdough pizzas with a careful char and a faint tang, topped with seasonal swaps like clams, pickled long hots, or pepper jelly instead of pepperoni. Philadelphia magazine named it Best New Restaurant in 2021, and Michelin awarded it a Bib Gourmand in its Northeast Cities guide.
