The full ranking
Square pies with frico edges, brick cheese to the corners, and tangy sauce ladled on top. Detroit invented this style in 1946 at Buddy's on Conant, and the city still does it better than anywhere else.
Loui's Pizza (Hazel Park)
Founded in 1977 by Buddy's veteran Louis Tourtois, this Hazel Park dive serves what Metro Times now calls Detroit's definitive square pie: tangy sauce ladled in stripes, abundant brick cheese caramelized into crispy frico edges, and a thick crust that stays airy. Wine bottles hang from the ceiling and the red-checkered tablecloths haven't moved in decades.
Michigan & Trumbull (Corktown)
Nate Peck and Kristen Calverley returned to Corktown in 2020 with 8-by-10-inch pan pies that quietly became the city's most acclaimed, picked by Metro Times, Bon Appétit, and Tasting Table alike. Caramelized frico edges, an airy crust, and creative red and white pies like the Packard Pepperoni with hot honey. Portnoy scored it 7.8, the highest of any Detroit pizzeria he's reviewed.
Cloverleaf Pizza (Eastpointe)
The original Cloverleaf in Eastpointe is where Gus and Anna Guerra moved after selling Buddy's in 1953, making it the literal second home of Detroit-style pizza. The Clover 8, two four-piece pies served together so every slice is a corner, pairs caramelized brick cheese with a subtly herbal sauce.
Buddy's Pizza (Conant)
The Conant Street flagship is where Gus Guerra invented Detroit-style pizza in 1946, baking Sicilian-inspired dough in blue steel auto-parts pans. Every Buddy's pie is built the original way: brick cheese to the edges for the famed frico crust, with dollops of tangy sauce on top.
Grandma Bob's (Corktown)
A Corktown favorite that nails the basics: caramelized edges, airy interior, small cupped pepperonis, and a light dusting of parmesan over the sauce. Bon Appétit and Tasting Table both picked it, and Yelp reviewers rate it Detroit's highest pizza at 4.5 stars across 284 ratings.
Sicily's Pizzeria (Southwest Detroit)
Owner Ali Beydoun's Southwest Detroit pizzeria uses a naturally fermented sourdough crust with no sugar, no commercial yeast, and no bleached flour. The result is a light, airy pan pizza with a 4.8 Google rating across 428 reviews, the highest Google score on this list.
Pie Sci Pizza (Detroit)
What began as a Sunday pop-up inside Woodbridge Pub is now a Detroit and Oak Park cult favorite for inventive weekly specials. The Detroit-style pan pie has crisp crust, generous cupped pepperoni, and Pie Sci is one of only two on Bon Appétit's 8-spot 2025 roundup that Dave Portnoy has also reviewed on YouTube.
Supino Pizzeria (Eastern Market)
Detroit's leading thin-crust counterweight to the Detroit-style canon, Supino's Eastern Market shop serves wood-fired Italian pies that Portnoy scored 7.5 and that Google reviewers rate 4.6 across more than 3,000 ratings. The Bismarck, with prosciutto, ricotta, and an egg, is the order.
Niki's Pizza (Greektown)
The Greektown classic, named for Nikoletta Kefallinos, has been serving Detroit-style pies for decades alongside flaming saganaki. The dough is light and buttery, the sauce tangy, and Bon Appétit's 2025 roundup put this old-school standby back in the conversation.
Green Lantern Pizza (Madison Heights)
A 1955 Madison Heights farmhouse that takes its name from green lanterns hung during Prohibition. The square Detroit-style pie has crisp caramelized edges and a soft interior, and Google reviewers rate the flagship 4.6 stars across nearly 4,000 reviews, its highest score among the city's rating platforms.
