The full ranking
Buttery brioche, chilled mayo, brown-butter bao. The lobster roll has more than one orthodoxy in Boston, and the city does each one well.
James Hook & Co (Downtown)
A century-old family lobster operation right on the Atlantic Ave waterfront, ships fifty thousand pounds of lobster a day and packs the leftover sweet meat into an unbuttered, toasted top-loaded roll with mayo or hot butter. Boston Magazine's 2025 Best of Boston pick for the casual lobster roll.
Neptune Oyster (North End)
Boston Magazine's 2025 "Classy" Best Lobster Roll winner: a generous heap of fresh Maine lobster on a sweet, buttery, toasted brioche, hot with butter or cold with mayo, optional dollop of caviar. The wait at the marble bar of this tiny North End bistro is long for a reason.
Alive & Kicking Lobsters (Cambridge)
A no-frills fish market behind Putnam Ave that refuses to call it a roll. Their signature is the "lobster sandwich" on toasted Scali bread with a smear of mayo, all about that fresh, sweet meat and not the bun.
Yankee Lobster (Seaport)
A 75-year Seaport mainstay where you yell your order over the counter and they bring fresh hot or cold lobster rolls on a grilled hot dog bun to a paper tray. Time Out's top Boston pick in 2026 for ratio, freshness, and Crobster mash-up energy.
Eventide Fenway
The Fenway outpost of Portland's James Beard winner serves the singular brown butter lobster roll on a steamed bao bun, plus a cold summer version on a griddled steamed bun. Singular and rich enough that it works as an appetizer rather than a meal.
Row 34 (Seaport)
Chef Jeremy Sewall's Fort Point oyster bar pays homage to his lobsterman grandfather with Ethel's Creamy Lobster Roll, cold meat tossed with mayo, pickles, celery, lemon, and celery salt. They'll also do it hot with butter, both served with slaw and chips in the industrial textile warehouse space.
Pauli's (North End)
The North End sandwich shop home to the USS Lobstitution, a 28-ounce monster of knuckle and claw meat. The standard 7-ounce and 14-ounce rolls on grilled New England buns with mayo and lemon are why locals brave the tiny seating room.
Belle Isle Seafood (Winthrop)
A few minutes outside the city in Winthrop with airport views and best-in-class overstuffed rolls. The all-tail upgrade is over $40 and worth it; cash only and the ATM doesn't always work.
Little Whale Oyster Bar (Back Bay)
Michael Serpa's love letter to New England raw bars in a Newbury Street brownstone, with the lobster roll dressed cold with mayo or hot with butter on a buttery Iggy's Bread brioche. The dense roll holds up under all the lobster juice.
Saltie Girl (Back Bay)
Back Bay seafood bar whose fried lobster roll, crispy chunks topped with chili crisp and charred scallion ranch, has become a signature. The classic warm white-wine-butter version is great too, both served with house-made salt and vinegar chips.
