Harvard University ($52.0B)
Harvard's endowment, the largest of any university in the world, reached about $52 billion in fiscal 2024. Managed by Harvard Management Company, it funds roughly a third of the university's operating budget.
University of Texas System ($47.5B)
Backed by oil-and-gas royalties from vast West Texas landholdings, the UT System's $47.5 billion endowment is the largest of any public university system. It draws on the Permanent University Fund shared with Texas A&M.
Yale University ($41.4B)
Yale's $41.4 billion endowment is famous for the Yale Model of heavy alternative-asset investing pioneered by the late David Swensen. It remains one of the best-performing large endowments over the long run.
Stanford University ($37.6B)
Stanford's $37.6 billion endowment, managed by Stanford Management Company, ranks among the largest in the world. Strong returns and deep Silicon Valley philanthropy keep it near the top.
Princeton University ($34.1B)
Princeton's $34.1 billion endowment is the richest per student of any major US university. It underwrites one of the most generous no-loan financial-aid programs in the country.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology ($24.6B)
MIT's $24.6 billion endowment, overseen by MITIMCo, posted some of the strongest decade-long returns among elite schools. It supports the institute's research-heavy mission.
Texas A&M University System ($20.4B)
The A&M System's $20.4 billion endowment, the second-largest public-university fund, also draws on the Permanent University Fund's West Texas oil lands shared with UT. It anchors one of the largest universities in the nation.
University of Pennsylvania ($19.3B)
Penn's $19.3 billion endowment ranks among the largest of any Ivy League school. It helps fund the university and its sprawling academic medical enterprise.
University of Michigan ($19.2B)
Michigan's $19.2 billion endowment is the largest of any public university outside Texas. Decades of aggressive fundraising have built one of higher education's deepest reserves.
University of California System ($19.1B)
The ten-campus UC System's combined endowment reached $19.1 billion in fiscal 2024, managed by the Regents' investment office. It is among the fastest-growing large endowments in the country.
