Philly Cheesesteak
Thin-shaved ribeye griddled with onions and smothered in provolone or Whiz on a hoagie roll. Born at Pat's in 1930, it is the most imitated sandwich in America and still the standard every steak shop chases.
Bánh Mì
A crackling Vietnamese baguette stuffed with pork, pâté, pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, and chili. TasteAtlas rates it the best sandwich type in the world, and the banh mi shops multiplying on every continent agree.
Reuben
Corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss, and Russian dressing grilled on rye. Whether it was born at an Omaha poker game or a New York deli counter, Lovefood crowned it America's best sandwich in 2025.
Po' Boy
New Orleans French bread loaded with fried shrimp, oysters, or roast beef and dressed with lettuce, tomato, and pickles. Invented by the Martin brothers to feed striking streetcar workers in 1929, it made every list we gathered.
Cuban Sandwich
Roast pork, ham, Swiss, pickles, and mustard pressed flat between crusty Cuban bread. Born in Ybor City to feed cigar workers, fought over by Tampa and Miami, and beloved everywhere else.
Lobster Roll
Big chunks of steamed lobster in a buttered split-top bun, cold with mayo in Maine or warm with butter in Connecticut. New England summer distilled into a sandwich.
Texas Brisket Sandwich
Slow-smoked brisket, chopped or sliced, piled on a bun or white bread with pickles and onions. TasteAtlas ranks it the #2 sandwich type on earth, and anyone who has stood in line at an Austin smokehouse understands.
Grilled Cheese
Buttered bread, melted cheese, and a hot pan. The simplest entry in the canon and the one nobody outgrows, from diner American-on-white to Gruyère on sourdough.
Italian Sub (Hoagie)
Salami, capicola, mortadella, provolone, and the full vegetable garden under oil and vinegar on a seeded roll. Call it a sub, hoagie, hero, or grinder, the Italian deli classic is the default sandwich done right.
Torta
Mexico's sandwich tradition on a soft telera or bolillo roll, stuffed with anything from milanesa to carnitas with beans, avocado, and jalapeños. The drowned torta ahogada of Guadalajara is its messiest masterpiece.
