Martha's Vineyard turns out some of New England's most serious summer dining, from State Road's garden-driven farmhouse cooking in West Tisbury to the white-tablecloth French-American romance of l'etoile in Edgartown. The island leans hard into farm-to-table and boat-to-table cooking, with Detente, The Covington and The Sweet Life Cafe sourcing from local farms and fishermen, while Beach Road and Garde East put the harbor front and center. Spread across Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven and up-island Chilmark and Menemsha, many of the best rooms are seasonal, so call ahead off-season.
The Red Cat Kitchen (Oak Bluffs)
Chef Benjamin deForest's funky, art-filled spot near the ferry serves some of the island's most inventive farm-and-sea-to-table cooking, from off-the-boat seafood to an acclaimed oyster pan fry. Rock-solid cocktails and a lively patio make it a perennial celebrity-spotting favorite.
The Sweet Life Cafe (Oak Bluffs)
Chef Hal Ryerson and his wife Erin run this seasonal, farm-and-sea-driven kitchen inside a restored Victorian, with ever-changing plates like squid ink tagliatelle and kingfish crudo. A twinkle-lit garden patio and warm hospitality make it a favorite for locals and visitors alike.
Detente (Edgartown)
A tucked-away modern American kitchen and wine bar that has been one of the island's most consistent rooms for years, with a frequently changing menu of hand-rolled pasta, local seafood and house desserts. Dine in the cozy upstairs and downstairs rooms, at the soapstone bar or on the breezy garden patio.
State Road (West Tisbury)
A 2026 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, this antique-filled farmhouse tavern serves chef Jonathan Warnock's creative American fare with much of the produce plucked from its own gardens. Expect salt cod fritters, farmstand salads and a celebrated wagyu burger in a room anchored by a huge stone fireplace.
Chilmark Tavern (Chilmark)
A rural American bistro and one of the few proper sit-down dinners in quiet Chilmark, leaning heavily on New England farm-sourced ingredients from island littlenecks to Vineyard-raised shiitake. Because Chilmark is a dry town it is BYOB, with the bar happy to mix most cocktails from your own bottle.
l'etoile (Edgartown)
The island's most formal restaurant, serving inventive French-American tasting menus inside a restored whaling captain's house. Dinner unfolds in casually elegant dining rooms or under a tented patio, with a stylish bar l'etoile lounge for cocktails and wine.
Atria (Edgartown)
Set in a 19th-century captain's home from husband-and-wife team Christian and Greer Thornton, Atria balances dramatic new American plates with traditional New England elegance, including a famous wok-fried whole lobster. Downstairs, the Brick Cellar Bar offers a more casual menu and a global wine and beer list.
The Ocean Club (Vineyard Haven)
Opened in 2025 inside the landmark Martha's Vineyard National Bank building, this fine-dining room from seven-time James Beard nominee chef Marc Orfaly serves coastal Mediterranean, seafood and pasta. Ask about the vault table, an actual bank vault with its original door that seats up to eight.
Alchemy (Edgartown)
A long-running American bistro drawing on French, Italian and Spanish influences, with a Wine Spectator-honored list and what locals vote the best cocktails on the island year after year. Chef Christopher Stam brings a New York pedigree to a menu that runs more approachable than Edgartown's white-tablecloth set.
The Covington (Edgartown)
An intimate downtown Edgartown room serving seasonally driven, vegetable- and seafood-forward cooking with a Mediterranean lean, sourced from island farms. Creative farm-to-table plates and attentive service make it a regular pick for one of the island's best dinners.
