Cinque Terre (Liguria, Italy)
Five pastel fishing villages stacked on the Ligurian cliffs, linked by a coastal trail and a single rail line. Vernazza's harbor and Manarola's vineyard terraces are among the most photographed views in Italy.
Dubrovnik (Dalmatia, Croatia)
Honey-stone ramparts ring the Adriatic's most dramatic walled city, made famous again by Game of Thrones. Swim off the rocks below the Old Town walls or ride the cable car up Mount Srd for the view.
Menton (Côte d'Azur, France)
The last French town before Italy, its lemon-yellow and ochre facades climbing above a pebble seafront. Famous for the February Lemon Festival and lush gardens, it is the Riviera at its sunniest and least crowded.
Nerja (Costa del Sol, Spain)
A whitewashed Andalusian town where the Balcón de Europa promontory juts over the sea between sheltered coves. It keeps a real Spanish rhythm, and free tapas, even at the height of the Costa del Sol summer.
Nice (Côte d'Azur, France)
The capital of the French Riviera, where the Promenade des Anglais curves along a pebble bay below the pastel Old Town. Markets, Matisse, and socca make it the most complete base on the Côte d'Azur.
Sorrento (Bay of Naples, Italy)
Perched on tufa cliffs above the Bay of Naples, Sorrento looks across to Vesuvius and serves as the gateway to the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Lemon groves, ceramics, and the evening passeggiata in Piazza Tasso define it.
Kotor (Bay of Kotor, Montenegro)
A walled medieval port tucked at the head of the fjord-like Bay of Kotor, hemmed in by sheer limestone. It offers Adriatic drama to rival Croatia with a fraction of the crowds.
Positano (Amalfi Coast, Italy)
The Amalfi Coast's postcard town, its colorful houses tumbling down the cliffs to a pebble beach and turquoise water. Refined and expensive, with boat access to Capri and the Path of the Gods on the ridge above.
Antibes (Côte d'Azur, France)
Between Nice and Cannes, Antibes wraps a ramparted Old Town and the Riviera's biggest yacht harbor around the sandy Plage de la Gravette. The Picasso Museum in the seafront Château Grimaldi is the cultural draw.
Split (Dalmatia, Croatia)
Built inside Diocletian's Roman palace, this Dalmatian port wears 1,700 years of history as a living warren of cafes and bars wedged into ancient walls. Bacvice beach sits in town and the islands are a short ferry away.
